House Republicans haven’t even figured out how to elect a Speaker, yet some of them are already publicly vowing to “defund” DOJ Special Counsel Jack Smith and his criminal prosecution of Donald Trump. To be clear, they have zero ability to do this. It’s simply not a thing that exists.

There are two reasons House Republicans make these kinds of literally impossible threats. One is that such bravado plays well with their idiot base, who has no idea that such things aren’t even possible. The other is that House Republicans are hoping we’ll just sit back and cower in the face of these impossible threats, rather than taking a moment to remind ourselves that these aren’t even real things.

Take, for instance, Marjorie Taylor Greene’s recent insistence that House Republicans will somehow be able to defund the Special Counsel probe. She specifically stated that they’re going to cut off the Special Counsel’s salary, and that he won’t be willing to keep doing the job for free. This is just complete gibberish, from someone who has no knowledge or interest in how anything works, or even in what the House majority’s powers are.

She’s just making random impossible threats to try to scare you into paralysis. As always, your job is to not fall for this kind of thing. “Vigilance” does not mean actively cowering to every threat the other side makes, without regard for whether those threats are even real. Vigilance means educating yourself on how things work, so you can figure out the difference between real and imaginary threats when the other side makes them, so you know what you need to come up with a counter-strategy for, and what you simply need to very loudly laugh at.
